Bleeding when Defecating

Published at : 21-08-2019 View : 6934

Bleeding during a bowel movement, there may be fresh blood at the end of passing stools or you may witness blood on the tissue, it is usually painful. Sometimes the amount of blood is so small that it can only be detected by a fecal occult test (which checks for hidden blood in the stool).

More ABOUT bleeding when defecating

Bleeding when defecating can be bright red, maroon in color or occult (not visible to the naked eye). Causes of bleeding when defecating range from harmless, annoying conditions of the gastrointestinal tract such as hemorrhoids and anal tears (anal fissures) from straining against hard stools with constipation to serious conditions such as cancer. Blood in the stool should be evaluated by a health care professional and the blood is found only by testing the stool for blood (fecal occult blood testing) in the laboratory. Occult bleeding has many of the same causes as rectal bleeding and may result in the same symptoms like rectal bleeding. It is often associated with anemia that is due to loss of iron along with the blood.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF bleeding when defecating

Bright red blood present in or on the stool

Pain in the stomach, lower abdomen, rectum, or back

Change in stool color to black, red, or maroon

Stool test positive for occult blood loss (blood may present, but you cannot see it)

   Confusion

    Dizziness, lightheadedness

   Fainting, palpitations or rapid heartbeat

When to See a Doctor for Bleeding when defecating

Unless you know the blood in your stool is coming from hemorrhoids and the bleeding is not continuous nor does it cause any faintness or weakness, all signs of rectal bleeding, including bloody mucus in stool, should be reported to our doctor.

Our doctor at Heng Kang clinic will need to examine you and determine if you are passing fresh (red) blood or old (dark or tarry) blood. The amount of blood you are passing is also important. Other things our doctor will ask about are how long you’ve been passing blood and if you have any other symptoms or are otherwise feeling unwell.

Best Treatment for Bleeding when defecating

Most patients only pass from a few drops to a spoonful of blood in their stool, which is referred to as mild rectal bleeding. Usually, mild rectal bleeding can be evaluated and treated in the doctor’s office and does not require urgent treatment or hospitalization.

In other cases, patients report repeatedly passing larger quantities of blood that may be accompanied by blood clots. This moderate to severe rectal bleeding can deplete blood supply, causing weakness, low blood pressure, dizziness or fainting.

Treatment for blood in the stool depends upon the symptoms and cause of the bleeding in the stool. Heng Kang clinic is dedicated to providing excellent medical care and service for our patients.
