Risk Factors of Urinary Tract Infection for Women

  Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is common in women, and they experience more than one infection during their lifetime.

  Risk factors specific to women include:

  Sexual intercourse - Pressure on the female urinary tract during sexual intercourse can move bacteria around the anus into the bladder. Most women have the bacterium in their urine after sexual intercourse.

  Female anatomy - A woman has a shorter urethra than a man does, which shortens the distance that bacterium must travel to reach the bladder.

  Sexual activity - Sexually active women tend to have more than do women who aren't. Also, having a new sexual partner increases your risk.

  Certain types of birth control - Women who use diaphragms for the contraceptive methods may also at higher risk, as well as women who use spermicidal agents.

  Menopause - After menopause, a decline in circulating changes in the urinary tract that makes you more vulnerable to infection.
