Painful urination is a broad term that describes discomfort during urination. This pain may originate in the bladder, urethra, or perineum.Painful urination is a common sign of a urinary tract infection (UTI). A UTI can be the result of a bacterial infection. It can also be due to inflammation of the urinary tract. The urethra, bladder, ureters, and kidneys make up your urinary tract.

Common causes of painful urination

Infections A Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) occurs when excess bacteria build up somewhere in the urinary tract. This part of the body runs from the kidneys to the bladder to the urethra, which carries urine toward the outside of the body.

Sexually transmitted infections Gonorrhea, chlamydia, or herpes can cause urination to be painful for some people.

Prostate infection A short-term bacterial infection can result in a prostate infection or prostatitis. Chronic inflammationfrom another condition, such as an STI, can also cause prostatitis.

Kidney stones Sometimes, the kidney stones will lodge themselves near the area where urine enters the bladder. This can cause painful urination.

Sensitivity to chemicals in products Douches, vaginal lubricants, soaps, scented toilet paper, or contraceptive foams or sponges may contain chemicals that cause irritation.

Inflammation and irritation A range of problems can lead to inflammation or irritation of the urinary tract or genital area, leading to the symptom of painful urination. Besides infections, other reasons that area may be irritated or inflamed.

Something pressing against the bladder This could be an ovarian cyst or a kidney stone stuck near the entrance to the bladder.

Treatment for painful urination

Treatment for painful urination depends on the cause of the pain. Determining whether painful urination is caused by infection, inflammation, dietary factors, or a problem with the bladder or prostate is the first step in your treatment. If you suffer from frequent urinary tract infections, our doctor can help look into the underlying cause of this condition. Heng Kang Clinic have an advance equipment that can treat you effectively and safely.

The physical exam is then done with special attention given to the presence of urethral discharge, ulcers, enlarged inguinal lymph nodes, and with men, a physician may gently "milk" the penis by pulling down on the shaft to check for discharge.

The physical exam may also include an examination of other pelvic regions (such as the scrotum in men and the cervix in women) and an examination of the anus and throat for signs of inflammation. Depending on the results, the physician may order further tests or recommend a referral to a urologist.
