Constipation happens when bowel movements become less frequent and stools become difficult to pass. It happens most often because of the changes in diet or routine, or inadequate intake of fiber. Constipation is infrequent bowel movements or difficult passage of stools that persist for a few weeks or longer.

Symptoms of Constipation

The main symptoms of constipation have increased the difficulty and straining when passing stools. Passing fewer stools than common can be a sign of constipation.

  The symptoms include:

Passing fewer than three stools a week

   Having lumpy or hard stools

   Straining to have bowel movements

Feeling as though there is a blockage in your rectum that prevents bowel movements

Feeling as though that you can't empty the stool from your rectum

Need help to empty your rectum, such as using your hands to press on your abdomen and using a finger to remove stool from your rectum

Anal bleeding or fissures from the trauma caused by hard feces

Possible aggravation of the diverticular disease, hemorrhoids, and rectal prolapse

Causes of Constipation

Constipation most commonly occurs when waste or stool moves too slowly through the digestive tract or cannot be eliminated effectively from the rectum, which may cause the stool to become hard and dry.

  The causes include:

Diet: You might become constipated if you don’t eat enough high-fiber foods like vegetables, fruits, and whole grains Also, eating a lot of high-fat meats, dairy products, and eggs, or rich desserts and sugary sweets can cause constipation.

Using Too Many Laxatives and Enemas: Many people think that laxatives are a cure for constipation. But if you use laxatives frequently, your body might forget how to work on its own. Heavy use of laxatives can cause diarrhea. For the same reason, if you use enemas too, your body might begin to depend on them. Also, too many enemas may stop you from having normal bowel movements.

Lack of Exercise: Inactivity or long periods in bed because of illness or following surgery may cause constipation. Our doctors can suggest medicine for people who stay in bed and suffer from chronic constipation.

Holding back Bowel Movements: Ignoring an urge to have a bowel movement can cause constipation. Several people prefer to have bowel movements at home, but holding in a bowel movement can also cause constipation if the delay is too long.

Medical Conditions: Some health problems like stroke, diabetes, or a blockage in the intestines, can cause constipation. These disorders can affect the muscles or nerves used for normal bowel movements.
