Every female has a natural vaginal scent that can change throughout her menstrual cycle. A strong bad smell however, can be a sign of an infection, particularly if she is sexually active. Though it may be tempting to douche or use a vaginal deodorant to decrease vaginal odor.

Having a Vagina Smell

Even when you’re taking good care of your body and your vagina, you may experience unfamiliar smells. Some women notice that the bad smell becomes more pronounced after they’ve had unprotected sex. This smell can become extremely embarrassing for a women, making them feel weak. Vagina smell that happens because of infection or another problem is usually associated with other vaginal signs and symptoms such as itching, burning, irritation or discharge.

What are the causes of Vagina smell?

  Bacterial Vaginosis

The infection most commonly associated with a change in vaginal smell is bacterial vaginosis. Bacterial vaginosis, is not necessarily an Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD), although it is associated with sexual behavior.

  Yeast Infection

Yeast infections are known to cause vaginal smell changes in some women. Yeast infections are not sexually transmitted and, although they are sometimes associated with sex, some women are prone to them for other reasons.

Douching, in particular, can be a bad idea if you have a vaginal infection. Some suggests douching with an infection can increase the risk of it ascending into your uterus and causing pelvic inflammatory disease.

  Pelvic inflammatory disease

The other reason why you might have a fishy vaginal smell is if you are suffering from pelvic inflammatory disease. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease is an infection in your pelvis that happens when a vaginal infection spreads upwards into the reproductive organs like the uterus, Fallopian tubes, or ovaries.

  Poor hygiene

Not bathing or showering regularly can lead to inflammation of the vaginal area, which can cause vaginal smell.

  Menstruation and post-sex bleeding

During or immediately following a period, the vagina may smell metallic due to iron from the blood and tissue breakdown in the uterus. When bleeding occurs during or after sex, it may also be accompanied by a metallic odor.

Tight-fitting clothing is a common culprit. That includes some shape wear. Fecal matter that travels to the vagina can cause infections and bad smell, so avoid clothing that encourages this spread. This includes tight-fitting thong underwear.
